I am pleased to announce that the book - Baba Yaga: The Wild Witch of the East in Russian Fairy Tales - has finally been published by Mississippi University Press. Gaiman also used Baba Yaga in The Books of Magic comic series, and the way he has deployed the character highlights her moral ambiguity: where she was helpful in Sandman, she is more of a baddie in Books of Magic.

It is an excellent book to introduce people into Slavic magic, but it also touches on advanced concepts for those who are familiar with the topic. Every time I'd decide to give up I'd reach a really great line, which is Barlow's strong point, imo. Either she can be seen as a literal evil witch, treated somewhat humorously in these prints, or as a figurative 'witch', an unpopular foreign empress.
